ASEAN Foreign Ministers Express Deep Concern Over Middle East Conflict
In a joint declaration, the ministers said they were closely observing the situation following attacks launched by the US and Israel against Iran on Feb. 28 and subsequent retaliatory strikes by Iran on multiple countries in the region, “which continue to heighten tensions in the Middle East and pose a grave threat to the lives and safety of civilians, as well as to regional and global peace and stability.”
“We call on all countries to respect international law, including the Charter of the United Nations,” they added, emphasizing the importance of avoiding measures that could further destabilize the region.
The officials noted that the escalation was particularly regrettable as it unfolded amid ongoing diplomatic efforts, including mediation led by Oman aimed at reaching a negotiated resolution to the crisis.
"We further reiterate the obligations to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure in armed conflicts consistent with international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions," they stated.
“We emphasize the importance of an immediate cessation of hostilities and call on all parties concerned to exercise utmost self-restraint, avoid any acts that may further aggravate the situation, and resolve differences through diplomacy and dialogue in the interest of maintaining peace and stability in the region,” they added.
