Japan’s PM Takaichi dissolves parliament for early elections
Speaking at a press briefing in Tokyo on Monday, Takaichi confirms that the dissolution will take place on Friday, coinciding with a previously scheduled parliamentary session.
Takaichi assumes office in October, becoming the country’s 104th prime minister.
The move accelerates the election timeline, bringing forward polls that were originally not required until October 2028. The snap vote could now take place as early as February 8.
To secure leadership of the government, a party or governing alliance must win at least 233 seats in the 465-seat lower house of Japan’s two-chamber legislature.
