Japan’s PM Takaichi Set to Dissolve Lower House of Parliament
Speaking at a press briefing in Tokyo, Takaichi confirmed that the dissolution will take place Friday during a scheduled parliamentary session. “The parliament will be dissolved on Friday, when lawmakers meet for a scheduled session,” she said.
Takaichi, who became Japan’s 104th prime minister in October, is moving up the electoral timetable significantly. The vote, initially required no later than October 2028, could now be held as soon as February 8.
Japan’s lower house, which has 465 seats, requires a majority of at least 233 for a party or coalition to secure the premiership.
