Three Dutch Parties Opt to Create Rare Minority Government Coalition
D66, the liberal democratic bloc that emerged victorious in late October's national vote, will forge an alliance with the Christian Democrats Appeal (CDA) and the right-leaning VVD to assemble a Cabinet. This administration will require ad hoc backing from opposition factions to enact laws.
The trio commands just 66 lower chamber seats—falling 10 votes shy of a governing threshold—while facing a 16-seat deficit in the upper chamber.
"The new cabinet team is going to have to work hard," D66 leader Rob Jetten stated, poised to assume the prime minister's office. "But we think we can do it."
The coalition intends to extend invitations to rival parliamentary leaders for consultations within days.
Christian Democratic Appeal chief Henri Bontenbal characterized the arrangement as "the new political reality."
"It would be great if we could switch to a new political culture as well," he remarked, alluding to hostilities between certain political camps.
A representative from the left-leaning GroenLinks-PvdA coalition—which secured 20 parliamentary positions in the election—labeled the minority framework a "risky political experiment."
The strategy will generate "unnecessary uncertainty," the representative informed broadcaster NOS.
Multi-week deliberations among D66, CDA, and VVD have now concluded their preliminary phase. Discussions will pivot toward hammering out the substantive terms of their governing pact.
