Zelensky meets Macron in Paris ahead of leaders-level summit
He highlighted the urgent need to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses to protect civilians and critical infrastructure from Russian attacks, noting that “every delivery of air defense missiles saves lives and boosts the chances for diplomacy.” Zelenskyy described his discussion with Macron as substantive on defense capabilities and focused on “important political steps” in preparation for the summit. He stressed that each meeting should produce tangible results, including new air defense systems, assistance packages, and capabilities to safeguard Ukrainian airspace.
The summit brings together 35 countries that have supported Ukraine and are prepared to deploy troops in the event of a ceasefire. Zelenskyy called this gathering “the most representative meeting of the Coalition of the Willing,” noting the presence of heads of state, international organization leaders, ministers, and ambassadors.
Discussions are expected to cover the progress of peace negotiations, developments in draft peace plans, and the coalition’s role in providing security guarantees for Ukraine. Over the weekend, national security advisers from 15 countries, along with NATO and EU representatives, met in Kyiv to coordinate efforts.
Earlier Tuesday, France’s Chief of Defense Staff Fabien Mandon noted that he participated in a chiefs of general staff meeting in Paris, where they discussed security guarantees for Ukraine and the ways in which they would be implemented.
