Ecuador’s President Mandates Temporary Relocation of Government Headquarters

(MENAFN) Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa on Saturday mandated the temporary relocation of the executive branch’s headquarters to Latacunga, the capital of Cotopaxi province, according to the government.

In an official decree, Noboa explained that the shift is intended to "get closer to the people and address their needs on the ground."

Meanwhile, Vice President Maria Jose Pinto was directed to carry out her responsibilities temporarily from Otavalo, located in the northern Imbabura province.

This move follows a government decision to end diesel subsidies just one day prior, a measure that has sparked fierce opposition from transport unions, indigenous communities, and labor groups.

In response, urban transport operators in Pichincha province—which includes Quito, the seat of the executive branch—declared a suspension of services beginning Monday.

The removal of the subsidy caused diesel prices to surge from $1.80 to $2.80 per gallon, effective immediately on Saturday.
