German defense minister criticizes Russia over Ukraine peace talks

(MENAFN) Germany’s Defense Minister, Boris Pistorius, on Wednesday criticized Russia for showing “no willingness to compromise” on a revised peace plan for Ukraine, according to reports.

Speaking to parliament, Pistorius defended Germany’s plan to substantially boost defense spending, arguing that Moscow shows no interest in a political resolution. He stated, “I see no desire for peace in Russian President Vladimir Putin – neither in his rhetoric nor in his actions. His initial reaction to the new proposals shows no sign of willingness to compromise,” while emphasizing Germany’s commitment to enhancing military support for Ukraine.

The minister highlighted that any peace settlement must be just and lasting, warning that Ukraine should not be pressured into making unilateral territorial concessions. He also stressed that Kyiv must retain strong armed forces and receive dependable security guarantees, particularly from the United States.

Pistorius criticized US President Donald Trump’s initial 28-point plan for Ukraine, noting it was revised after discussions in Geneva involving US, Ukrainian, and European officials. “Nothing concerning the future of European states, NATO, or the European Union should be negotiated or decided over our heads,” he said.

He further warned that Europe must strengthen its own defense capabilities. “The geopolitical chessboard is changing rapidly. Its patterns, its arrangements, and alliances are shifting faster than would have been conceivable before,” Pistorius said. He urged European nations to increase conventional deterrence and defense, emphasizing the importance of making NATO more European while maintaining its transatlantic character.
